- Refractive errors are common vision problems that cause difficulty seeing clearly. They are usually corrected with glasses.
- The most common refractive problems are:
– Myopia: dificulty seeing far away
– Hyperopia: difficulty seeing near
-Astigmatism: difficulty in focusing due to defects in the cornea or lens
– Presbyopia: loss of the ability to focus on near objects, due to aging
- They are identified by an examination of visual acuity and refraction, which is recommended to be done every 1 to 2 years
Symptoms
- Blurry or distorted vision
- Headaches
- Frowning
- Partial eye closure for reading
- Excessive blinking or frequent eye rubbing
Treatment
- Vision usually improves with the use of spherical or cylindrical lenses (conventional or contact). Laser surgery may also be performed, if the requirements are met
